About This Quote

The famous Saudi women’s activist Manal al-Sharif was arrested in 2011 after she filmed herself driving her own car in Saudi Arabia. For this act, she was sentenced to 10 months in prison and 600 lashes. When she was imprisoned, she was photographed looking at the camera with what looked like a smile on her face. This image became an iconic symbol of women’s rights. She was also asked to testify against the man who filmed the video of her driving, for which she received an additional sentence of 15 years.
